CrossFit Medical Society™ Newsletter

December 2024, Issue 6

A Year In Review

The CrossFit Medical Society launched in June of this year and since then we’ve been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and support from the community. In such a short period of time we’ve had the opportunity to connect with and learn from so many of you. We know that the work we are all doing is the kind of thing that changes the world. For almost 25 years CrossFit has been the leader in fitness. As we push ahead into 2025, we know that our affiliates can position themselves in the center of the medicine 3.0 ecosystem and together we can forge elite health.

Setting the stage for what comes next, let’s take a moment and reflect on the past year. Thank you to the team and everyone who has believed in and supported this mission since before its inception. If you missed any of the newsletters or Grand Rounds videos, we’ve included a recap below. The providers in the CFMS are passionate about their work, dedicated to educating others, and advocate for the importance of the CrossFit Methodology in improving health outcomes.

Additionally, we’ve worked hard to create opportunities and resources for all of us to regain control of our healthcare journeys. Whether it be direct access to purchase lab panels, connect directly with providers on the CFMS directory, or join CommunityCare as a solution to healthcare, these are tools that help us change the dysfunction and put the affiliate at the center of the healthcare ecosystem.

Exciting things are on the horizon. In 2025 we’re looking forward to opening CommunityCare to the entire CrossFit community so that members in your affiliate can join and benefit from a healthcare solution that truly champions the creation of health. Tools and equipment such as portable indirect calorimetry devices (think testing resting metabolic rate and VO2 Max) will be available through the CFMS partner network. Affiliates who want to layer in additional metrics of health can build health homes from the inside out.

Circling back to the importance of continued learning, we want to double-down on educating others in the healthcare profession on the power of the CrossFit Methodology. We’ll continue with online education, on-demand articles, and Grand Rounds, but we’re looking forward to in-person events all over the globe. Highlighting the work being done in affiliates and in partnership with providers is how we continue to push forward. Let us know if you're interested in hosting an educational experience for affiliates and healthcare professionals in your area!

Rocky Vista University , College of Osteopathic Medicine

I entered medical school hoping to find the root causes of disease to help treat people and help them become healthier. So far, in my 2 years of medical school, I have yet to have a course that goes into the physiology, benefits, and outcomes of exercise and good nutrition. At our school we (the students) are pushing to get nutrition and fitness integrated into our curriculum. We recognize the necessity of understanding the fundamentals of these things to provide more information to our future patients. I couldn’t wait any longer for the school to approve or experiment with a new curriculum to introduce these things. We have had speakers and professors give their opinions on nutrition and exercise, but it was information that has been debunked for a long time in the fitness industry. This could cause confusion for patients trying to live a healthier lifestyle. So, I decided to bring some experts in…

A few club leaders and I organized a “CrossFit as Healthcare” event for 1st and 2nd year medical students to come learn about the CrossFit methodology. We had an L3 coach with certification in CrossFit nutrition, a Master’s Games athlete, and a national weightlifting champion and the owner of the local affiliate, CrossFit Zion, come present to the students. The expertise provided a lot of the information us medical students were itching for. Students were finally able to hear exercise methodologies and nutrition advice that made sense and had data to prove that it worked. Hopefully other medical schools can follow suit and bring the local affiliates into schools to provide relevant and useful knowledge to their medical students. It would be a big step in filling the large holes in standard medical school education.

At the Forefront of Change

CrossFit Medical Society (CFMS) is proud to announce the launch of CommunityCare, a healthcare alternative, where members directly fund each other's medical expenses, bypassing the expense and waste of the existing health insurance system. In partnership with CrowdHealth, a leading innovator in healthcare crowdfunding, CommunityCare is an expression of the unique design of the CrossFit community with the financial benefits of a streamlined healthcare option tailored specifically to the needs of health-conscious individuals.

Enrollment for CFMS CommunityCare is currently open to CrossFit affiliate owners and coaches, who will be the first to benefit from this innovative solution. All other CrossFit members are invited to join the waitlist, with more widespread enrollment planned for the near future.

“The CrossFit Medical Society has foundational pillars rooted in community and a belief that a person’s healthcare journey is their own,” said Dr. Tom McCoy, Co-Founder of the CrossFit Medical Society. “CommunityCare creates another layer to our ecosystem with a person-centered approach to healthcare. Our hope is that this partnership with CrowdHealth not only brings flexible and affordable healthcare to the affiliate owner and coach, but continues to highlight the value the affiliate brings to their community.”
